January 24, 2011 update:
The Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport is currently constructing an Alternate Landing Surface on the west side of the airport to facilitate the future rehabilitation of the airport's only runway (16/34). The project is nearing completion but is still under construction.
The Alternate Landing Surface has been marked as Runway 17/35; however, the runway identification numbers are covered with temporary closed runway markers. Lighted X closed runway markers are also being used as work is ongoing and the pavement is not open for use.
Pilots should check the current NOTAMs for the latest information related to airport construction and operations. Recently, two NOTAMs were issued to aid pilots in identifying Runway 16/34:
01/006 - RWY 17/35 UNSAFE NOT CMSND. WIE UNTIL UFN.
01/005 (A0007/11) - RWY 16/34 RWY LGTS HIGH INTST CONT DALGT. WIE UNTIL UFN.
The following photo was taken looking southeast and shows the location of the Alternate Landing Surface (closed Runway 17/35) in relation to Runway 16/34.
